Project Description:
In 2023, our team successfully executed a comprehensive palm seedling nursery project in Ughelli, Delta State, for a private farm owner preparing for a large-scale oil palm plantation. The project involved selecting and preparing a 1-acre site with optimal soil conditions and proper drainage. We carried out complete land preparation, including tilling, leveling, and layout design, followed by the construction of a reinforced shade net structure to regulate sunlight and protect young seedlings from harsh weather.
Our scope included setting up a manual irrigation system tailored for uniform watering, preparing sterile potting media, and transplanting over 12,000 Tenera sprouted seeds into polybags. We implemented pest and disease control protocols using a mix of organic and low-impact chemical treatments, ensuring healthy, disease-free seedlings.
Throughout the growing phase, we managed the nursery with scheduled nutrient applications, regular monitoring, and weeding. By month five, over 95% of the seedlings were healthy and transplant-ready—meeting industry standards for palm nursery operations.
Outcome: The client successfully established a well-organized palm plantation using the nursery-raised seedlings. The project stands as a model of best practices in seedling management and farmer support.
